Problem statement For this problem; California Super Lotto, we had to choose 6 numbers from 1-47 without repeating them in the boxes. In order to win, all the numbers you chose have to match. With this problem we learned the possible combinations and the chances of winning. Problem and solution How many different combinations are possible in the CA super lotto ticket? The way me and my group solved this is by multiplying all the possible outcomes, which is the sample space. our sample space is 47 because we only have the option to chose a number between 1-47. In the picture bellow you can see that the numbers (sample space) are decreasing by one because your numbers can't repeat and your sample space goes down. For the mega number we have the option between 1-27 and the sample space for it stays 27 because it can repeat. When you multiply the numbers we got a total of 4,969,962,360 total combinations. To know this is the correct solution, we know that our sample space is 47 so have to multiply all the numbers in the sample space. When we multiply the number from the sample space it decreases by one because they can't be repeated. What is the probability of winning the CA super lotto? when my group and I try to figure this question out, we thought that what we had to do was as simple as just multiplying the sample space: 1/47* 1/46* 1/45* 1/44* 1/43* and 1/27. But then our teacher helped us understand the question better, and we realized in the equation that instead of putting 1 ontop, it would be 5,4,3,2,1 and 1 because the sample space decreases. Then after we had our equations set up we multiplied across which we got 120/4,969,962,360: and the possibility of winning the super lotto is 1/41,416,353. If you match all 6 numbers, you win $8,000,000. it costs $1 to play. What are your expected winnings? what my group and I did to find out what the expected winmings were is that we multiplied the possibility of winning; 1/41,416,353 by the winning prize; 8,000,000 and then we multiplied the possibility of loosing;41,416,353/41,416,353 by the amount of money you bet; $-1. Then we subtracted 8,000,000/41,416,353 from 41,416,352/41,416,353 = -0.81. This shows us thay the CA super lotto wins $0.81 for every dollar spent.
